In fifth Democratic presidential candidate debate, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar say national health insurance, like they have in Canada, Taiwan, South Korea, Scandinavia and the U.K., is unrealistic. “Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind., raised the issue unprompted, arguing that his policy of ‘Medicare for all who want it’ would be ‘a governing strategy we can unify the American people around’.”   https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2019-11-20/democratic-debate-medicare-for-all   There’s a problem with this approach, however. The younger, healthier people end up being covered by for-profit insurance through their employers, which is profitable because these healthy people make fewer claims, while the older, sicker people end up on Medicare, and this becomes financially unsustainable when only older, sicker people are in the coverage pool. Everyone needs to be in the same plan to spread the risk and make it work financially.
