CIA claims it blew up its own secret base in Kabul hours after attacks on airport and Baron Hotel. “Blowing up (Eagle Base) was intended to ensure that any equipment or information left behind would not fall into the hands of the Taliban…. In the early years of the war, a junior C.I.A. officer was put in charge of the Salt Pit, a detention site near Eagle Base. There the officer ordered a prisoner, Gul Rahman, stripped of his clothing and shackled to a wall. He died of hypothermia…. the detonation, hours after the airport attack, alarmed many people in Kabul, who feared that it was another terrorist bombing.”   https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/28/us/politics/cia-base-destroyed-kabul.html   Because everyone knows that blowing up computers and files is more effective than taking them out with you. “Eagle Base” is not found on Google Maps, but “Salt Pit” is. If I can Google it, I imagine ISIS-K can too. On the other hand, maybe the CIA didn’t want the Taliban giving journalists (or war crimes investigators) tours of an abandoned ‘black site‘, or to have it turn into a ‘dark tourism‘ destination?

Week of Extinction Rebellion protests in London involving thousands of climate crisis protesters and hundreds of arrests goes mostly uncovered by U.S. news media. “In what appeared to be the biggest mobilisation so far this week by the environmental protest group, several thousand demonstrators took a tour of the City, stopping off at the banks and law firms they saw as most culpable in the climate crisis. All week, groups based on local areas, or around issues such as gender, race or politics, have staged actions in different locations in central London. On Friday, the protest was staged in solidarity with black, brown and indigenous people, especially in the developing world…. protesters marched to Standard Chartered bank, where activists scaled the entrance and poured blood-red paint across its glass facade, to highlight the $31.4bn (£23bn) they say it had invested in fossil fuels since the Paris climate accords.”   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/aug/27/extinction-rebellion-targets-city-of-london-in-blood-money-protest

Alleged assassin of presidential candidate Robert Kennedy recommended for parole at 16th hearing. “Kennedy had just given a victory speech after winning California’s (1968) Democratic presidential primary and looked likely to win the party’s nomination. Paul Schrade, a labor leader who’d worked with the senator, was also shot by Sirhan that night, but he believes Sirhan should be released. ‘Sirhan did not shoot Robert Kennedy,’ Schrade, now 96, maintains. ‘I got the first shot, the second shot missed Kennedy.'”   https://www.kpbs.org/news/2021/aug/27/sirhan-sirhan-has-served-53-years-for-killing/

Story of South Dakota attorney general’s fatal collision with a pedestrian becomes even stranger. “At 10:20, according to cell phone data obtained by the investigators, he unlocked his phone and signed into his Yahoo email account. From there, Ravnsborg scanned headlines before landing on an article published by a right-wing website about Riding the Dragon, a documentary billed as an exposé… of Joe Biden and his family’s relationship to China…. At 10:22, prosecutors determined he locked his phone. A minute later, (Jason) Ravnsborg veered (on to) the right shoulder, where (Joseph) Boever was walking, sending his head through the windshield…. Cell phone data, the investigators said, showed Ravnsborg had walked by the corpse, which was less than two feet off the road and about 60 feet behind where the damaged Ford Taurus was parked. One of the agents said that Boever’s lifeless body, which had been stripped of clothes in the crash, was ‘lily white’ and almost certainly would have been illuminated by the cell phone flashlight Ravnsborg used to search the area. The agents also pointed out that Boever had himself been carrying a flashlight, which wound up on the edge of the grass.”   https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/08/how-a-deadly-crash-upended-south-dakota-politics   And it gets even stranger…. Researchers who created a data scanning system similar to the one proposed by Apple for detecting underage sexual content say they ending up deciding the technology was too easy for governments to abuse. “After many false starts, we built a working prototype. But we encountered a glaring problem. Our system could be easily repurposed for surveillance and censorship. The design wasn’t restricted to a specific category of content; a service could simply swap in any content-matching database, and the person using that service would be none the wiser.”   https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/08/19/apple-csam-abuse-encryption-security-privacy-dangerous/   Edward Snowden also thinks its a bad idea. “‘Apple’s new system, regardless of how anyone tries to justify it, will permanently redefine what belongs to you, and what belongs to them,’ Snowden said in his Continuing Ed blog on Substack. The proposal by a ‘pro-privacy’ company like Apple marks the dawn of a ‘dark future’ and is a ‘disaster-in-the-making’, the NSA whistleblower warned.”   https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/08/22669137/apple-has-declared-war-on-your-privacy-edward-snowden-reacts-to-iphone-csam-scanning-feature   Apple promises it will never let the system be misused or used for other purposes. I’d feel better about this if there were outside groups making sure the company is keeping this promise. Another approach would be to simply block identified sexual abuse photos from being transmitted or saved. The system could just delete them and leave law enforcement out of it. Of course that means pro-democracy material could also be deleted if the system fell into the wrong hands, but that’s not as bad as turning pro-democracy activists over to the police.

Portland, Oregon’s mayor and police commissioner praise the ‘hands-off’ approach the city’s police took to Sunday’s violent political clashes between Proud Boys and anti-fascist groups. “The political violence culminated late Sunday afternoon, when gunshots rang through downtown Portland leaving bystanders and journalists to duck behind vehicles. Why U.S. and Israel refuse to acknowledge Israel’s nuclear weapons program. “US Senators Stuart Symington and John Glenn learned that Israel (with help from some proxies in the US) in the 1960s diverted enough US weapons grade uranium from the government contractor NUMEC to build a dozen bombs. Extinction Rebellion not an extremist group, unless it’s being directed by leftists, says man advising U.K. government. “John Woodcock, the former Labour MP who was asked by the Home Office this year to examine disruption and violence by extreme political groups, sought to reassure XR activists that he did not regard the movement as uniformly extreme during a Zoom video conference call last month. ‘You’re worried that I want to label everyone who supports XR as extremists and that is certainly not the case,’ he said…. However, Woodcock left open the possibility he might describe parts of the group as extreme in his report. He asked if XR was hiding a ‘far-left’ anti-capitalist agenda and claimed there were concerns that far-left groups might be infiltrating the movement.”   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/aug/21/wrong-to-label-extinction-rebellion-as-extremists-says-home-office-adviser   In a neoliberal society, anti-capitalism apparently equals extremism! Does that make Pope Francis, Bernie Sanders and  Jeremy Corbyn extremists?

Oil companies accused of dodging flaring and venting rules intended to limit greenhouse gas emissions, due to lax enforcement by state authorities. “Of the 227 flares observed during the three flyovers, 84% didn’t have a permit associated with them. Cable news channels failing to inform viewers that military experts they are featuring on their shows have financial ties to defense industry. “(Retired general Jack) Keane was just one of a parade of ex-military and ex-public officials who appeared on cable news this week to castigate the Biden administration for its withdrawal or for the way it was carried out. Among the other talking heads who took to cable news segments or op-ed pages without disclosing their defense industry ties were retired Gen. David Petraeus; Rebecca Grant, a former staffer for the Air Force secretary; Richard Haass, who worked as an adviser to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell; and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Federal appeals court rules that plaintiffs can’t sue NSA over warrantless surveillance programs unless they can prove they were personally spied upon. “Today’s decision renders government mass surveillance programs essentially unreviewable by U.S. courts, since no individual will be able to prove with the certainty the Ninth Circuit required that they were particularly spied upon,” the (Electronic Frontier foundation) said in a blog post. “This hurdle is insurmountable, especially when such programs are shrouded in secrecy, and the procedures for confronting that secrecy are disregarded by the courts.”   https://www.courthousenews.com/nsa-spying-case-is-dismissed-again/
