FBI now claims motive for Las Vegas mass shooting was Stephen Paddock’s perceived mistreatment by casinos. “A fellow gambler told the FBI that ‘Paddock was very upset at the way casinos were treating him and other high rollers’, noting that roughly three years earlier casinos had started banning high rollers from certain events, hotels and even casinos…. The report states that the acquaintance believed the stress about how high rollers were being treated could ‘easily be what caused Paddock to snap.’ …. Paddock considered himself a professional gambler, according to the documents, and told one person interviewed by the FBI that it had become his main source of income roughly three years prior to the shooting.”   https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2023/03/30/fbi-mandalay-bay-shooter-who-killed-60-angered-how-casinos-treated-him/11572044002/    High-rollers being mistreated by casinos? Professional gambler? Give me a break, is this the best you guys can do? This theory seems much more plausible to me, especially since ISIS claimed responsibility https://time.com/4965449/isis-las-vegas-shooter-stephen-paddock/ for the attack: “The [Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department] knows the motive behind the attack, but the FBI will not allow us to release the motive because it implicates the FBI in illegal arms deals and supplying arms to ISIS terrorists within U.S. borders. Stephen Paddock was an undercover FBI agent who participated in multiple illegal arms deals in the Las Vegas area in a gun-running entrapment scheme similar to ‘Fast and Furious’. Paddock thought he was engaging in another routine arms transfer, but ISIS had learned about the entrapment scheme and Paddock’s true identity. They killed him and carried out the massacre, and then fled the scene.”   https://rense.com/general96/isisgunmanvegas.html

Journalist in Bangladesh arrested for reporting citizens’ opinions. “Samsuzzaman Shams of Prothom Alo daily appeared in court and was denied bail, a day after he was arrested. His story – which ran on 26 March, the country’s Independence Day – is alleged to have ‘smeared the government’…. [It] featured ordinary Bangladeshis talking about their lives on Independence Day. One quotation was from a labourer who asked: ‘What is the use of this freedom if we can’t afford rice?’ The comment was seen to reflect growing worries about escalating food prices, which have soared around the world since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”   https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-65121831

A Northwestern University poll released earlier this week showed the [mayoral] race is in a dead heat, with Johnson and Vallas each receiving 44% support and 12% of voters still undecided…. ‘Are you on the side of working people, or are you on the side of the speculators and billionaires? French woman arrested for calling President Macron ‘piece of filth’ on social media. “She was arrested on Friday and held in custody for questioning after the state’s local administrative office filed a complaint over her Facebook post, the prosecutor in the northern town of Saint Omer, Mehdi Benbouzid, told AFP. The complaint focused on a post on her Facebook [post] made on March 21, the day before Macron gave a lunchtime interview to TF1 television to defend his controversial pension reforms that have sparked nationwide protests. ‘This piece of filth is going to address you at 1:00 pm… it’s always on television that we see this filth,’ she wrote…. The administration was forced to hold the sale after Joe Manchin added it to the Inflation Reduction Act, the major climate and energy bill that President Joe Biden signed last year…. ‘We’re really disappointed we didn’t see something lesser in scope, this is basically offering up most of the Gulf,’ [Earthjustice attorney George] Torgun said. ‘It’s another massive lease sale.'”   https://edition.cnn.com/2023/03/29/politics/gulf-of-mexico-drilling-lease-sale-biden-climate/index.html

Georgia law enforcement response to ‘Cop City’ protests raising civil liberties red flags. “In December 2022, when the first round of domestic terrorism charges were levied against Defend the Atlanta Forest protesters, Atlanta Police Department Assistant Chief Carven Tyus commented, ‘…. Why is an individual from Los Angeles, California, concerned about a training facility being built in the state of Georgia? And that is why we consider that domestic terrorism.’ …. All arrestees following the [January 2023] downtown Atlanta protests were charged with arson, with little regard for who actually committed which crime. The domestic terrorism arrest warrants relied heavily on guilt by association, listing out all of the alleged crimes committed by any members of Defend the Atlanta Forest over an unspecified period, rather than individualizing the arrest warrants to the actual actions committed…. Local law enforcement threatened Truthout contributor Frances Madeson, reportedly saying, ‘Don’t you know it’s a felony to travel from another state for a protest?’ After covering a 15-person protest, Truthout Senior Editor and Staff Reporter Candice Bernd was followed by police, detained, and the friend who was driving her was issued two tickets for exceedingly minor traffic violations…. the Georgia Information Sharing and Analysis Center [a ‘fusion center’] responded [to a public records request] with a bad-faith interpretation of open records exemptions. RESTRICT Act is far broader than just banning TikTok. “[Sen. Mark Warner’s]… RESTRICT Act doesn’t specifically mention TikTok or ByteDance. Rather, it would grant the U.S. secretary of commerce the broad power to ‘identify, deter, disrupt, prevent, prohibit, investigate, or otherwise mitigate … any risk arising from any covered transaction by any person, or with respect to any property’ that the secretary determines to pose ‘an undue or unacceptable risk’ in several different areas. These include federal elections, ‘information and communications technology products and services’, and ‘critical infrastructure or digital economy’, as well as ‘coercive or criminal activities by a foreign adversary that are designed to undermine democratic processes and institutions or steer policy and regulatory decisions in favor of the strategic objectives of a foreign adversary to the detriment of the national security of the United States’…. Senate revokes the president’s authority to unilaterally conduct military operations in Iraq. “On Wednesday, by a vote of 66–30, the Senate passed S. 316, the bill to repeal the two authorizations for the use of military force (AUMFs) against Iraq currently in effect. The first AUMF, passed in 1991, authorized the deployment of troops after Iraq invaded Kuwait, while the second, passed in 2002, allowed the president to use military force ‘as he determines to be necessary and appropriate’ to ‘defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq’…. U.S. accused of hypocrisy over its allegations of TikTok data collection. “While US citizens have some protections against warrantless searches under the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution, the US government has maintained that these rights do not extend to foreigners overseas, giving agencies such as the National Security Agency (NSA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) practically free rein to snoop on their communications…. ‘It is a case of “rules for thee but not for me”,’ Asher Wolf, a tech researcher and privacy advocate based in Melbourne, Australia, told Al Jazeera…. ‘It is a little bit ironic for the US to sort of trumpet citizens’ privacy concerns or worries about surveillance. Scottish National Party elects Humza Yousaf as its new leader. “The new leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) — and of Scotland — is a thirty-seven-year-old Muslim, a self-described ‘republican’ [anti-monarchist] and ‘socialist’ whose primary political objective is the break up of the British state. Under his leadership, the SNP and the wider cause of Scottish independence faces a stark choice between revival and decline…. Yousaf’s victory staved off an unexpectedly forceful right-wing revolt. He was the overwhelming favorite of the party hierarchy and had the support of SNP legislators in Edinburgh and London, as well as the tacit approval of Nicola Sturgeon herself — who remained officially neutral throughout the contest…. The SNP considers itself a party of the center left, but it also desperately wants to win elections (or to go on winning elections: it has been in power at Holyrood for the past sixteen years). The crux of [Kate] Forbes’s campaign pitch was that she was better placed than Yousaf to convert conservative and unionist Scots to the independence cause. A surprisingly large chunk of the SNP’s base agreed…. Yousaf is Sturgeon’s heir, and Sturgeon, above all, was a gifted manipulator of Scottish public opinion who regularly gestured at social change but never delivered on her transformative potential. The statistics tell their own story. At the start of her first ministerial tenure in 2014, child poverty rates in Scotland stood at 24 percent. U.S. is now Europe’s top crude oil supplier. “In December, 18% of the bloc’s crude imports came from America, EU data office Eurostat said Tuesday…. Russia was until recently the bloc’s top supplier of crude, accounting for as much as 31% of total imports until the end of January 2022, according to Eurostat. The US, meanwhile, came a distant second, with a maximum 13% share…. But Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February last year led to an upheaval in Europe’s energy supplies. EU states slashed their imports of Russia’s energy, and the bloc imposed sanctions on the country’s oil and coal exports…. Only Russia, China and Brazil voted in favour of the Russian-drafted text on Monday, while the remaining 12 council members abstained…. ‘Without an objective and transparent international investigation, the truth will not be uncovered as to what happened,’ Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the council before the vote.”   https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/3/27/un-security-council-turns-down-request-for-nord-stream-inquiry   Seems a little suspicious. U.S. soldier wounded in retaliatory drone strike in Syria. “Both attacks late Friday happened about the same time, the official said. One involved three drones targeting one facility and the other involved five rockets fired at a separate facility, according to the official, who said one American service member was wounded and was in stable condition. The official said that two of the three drones that targeted one U.S. facility were shot down, but one drone made it through. There were no injuries in that attack. Amnesty International accuses West of human rights ‘double standards’ on war crimes. “‘In 2022, we had the fantastic example of how the world came to support and show solidarity with the Ukrainian people. But we did not have a similar kind of support and solidarity for the Palestinian people, the people of Ethiopia, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo,’ Agnes Callamard, Amnesty’s secretary-general, told Al Jazeera from Paris on Monday…. ‘It was also marked by commitment and actual actions to support international investigation into those war crimes. The International Criminal Court did intervene very quickly and frankly, very unusually,’ she added…. Callamard said because the reaction to Ukraine had been so ‘multifaceted’, covering many dimensions including the issue of Ukrainian refugees, it made the ‘silence, the indifference and the neglect very glaring’ when compared with other instances of human rights violations.”   https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/3/28/ukraine-war-excerbated-human-rights-double-standards-amnesty

U.N. investigation finds widespread human rights violations in fractured Libya. “A United Nations-backed inquiry has found war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed in Libya by security forces and armed militia groups. The investigators commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council found, ‘migrants, in particular, have been targeted and there is overwhelming evidence that they have been systematically tortured.’ In the report released on Monday, the team of three independent investigators also said they had reasonable grounds to believe that there were incidents of sexual slavery…. Investigators said ‘there are reasonable grounds to believe that migrants across Libya are victims of crimes against humanity and that acts of murder, enforced disappearance, torture, enslavement, sexual violence, rape and other inhumane acts are committed in connection with their arbitrary detention.'”   https://www.dw.com/en/un-backed-probe-finds-proof-of-torture-sex-slavery-in-libya/a-65139276   Thanks, NATO!   “The NATO campaign in Libya was initially aimed at saving civilians in Benghazi threatened by Libyan government forces, but the objective soon expanded to toppling Qaddafi….  Libya disintegrated as rival militias feuded for power, and ISIS seized the opportunity to establish a franchise operation. Russia takes down attack drone south of Moscow, explodes after crashing. “An explosion in Russia reportedly injured three people, including a 16-year-old girl, on Sunday. Russian authorities blamed a Ukrainian drone for the blast 175 kilometres south of Moscow. The explosion occurred shortly after 3:00 pm local time in the town of Kireyevsk in the Tula region, about 300 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. Ukraine has not commented on the explosion. Chipotle fined by National Labor Relations Board for closing outlet during union drive. “Chipotle agreed to the [$240,000] fine, which will be split among the former employees of the Augusta, Maine, location, a Chipotle spokesperson confirmed to Insider on Monday. The news was earlier reported by the Kennebec Journal of Augusta. The employees filed a petition to form a union last June — the first time Chipotle employees had taken that step. The following month, Chipotle said it would close the location, citing problems recruiting enough employees to run the location, CNBC reported. FBI bought internet ‘netflow’ data as recently as 2017. “Netflow data creates a picture of traffic volume and flow across a network. This can include which server communicated with another, information that is ordinarily only available to the owner of the server or to the internet service provider (ISP) carrying the traffic. Team Cymru, the company ultimately selling this data to the FBI, obtains it from deals with ISPs by offering them threat intelligence in return. These deals are likely conducted without the informed consent of ISPs’ users. Supreme Court declines to hear case of lawyer prosecuted by judge. “Justice Neil Gorsuch railed against the Supreme Court’s decision Monday not to review the prosecution of Steven Donziger, claiming the criminal case against the disbarred environmental lawyer violated the U.S. Constitution…. Donziger was sentenced to criminal contempt in New York, where the oil giant Chevron sued him after the lawyer represented indigenous Ecuadorians whose rainforest home is now polluted by decades of oil development. Though the case in Ecuador ended in a $9.8 billion verdict, Chevron later won a judgment in the Southern District of New York that said the verdict had been obtained by fraud. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan presided over those proceedings and later charged Donziger personally after the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to pursue the case. In the view of the dissenting justices, the district court usurped the power of the executive branch by appointing prosecutors for the case…. ‘In this country, judges have no more power to initiate a prosecution of those who come before them than prosecutors have to sit in judgment of those they charge,’ Gorsuch wrote.”   https://www.courthousenews.com/lawyer-imprisoned-after-taking-on-chevron-finds-friends-at-high-court/

Scientists find large insecticide contaminated area on seafloor near Los Angeles. “… the nation’s largest manufacturer of DDT… once used the ocean as a huge dumping ground — and… as many as half a million barrels of its acid waste had been poured straight into the water. Now, scientists have discovered that much of the DDT — which had been dumped largely in the 1940s and ’50s — never broke down. The chemical remains in its most potent form in startlingly high concentrations, spread across a wide swath of seafloor larger than the city of San Francisco…. Significant amounts of DDT-related compounds continue to accumulate in California condors and local dolphin populations, and a recent study linked the presence of this once-popular pesticide to an aggressive cancer in sea lions.”   https://www.yahoo.com/news/scientists-uncover-startling-concentrations-pure-222417576.html   No mention of any danger to humans who consume fish caught in the area, or if contamination has been observed in these fish.

Jacksonville, Florida man who drove away from traffic stop after declining to let police search his vehicle, opens fire on police a week later after the door to his home is opened. “The officer seen in the video tells [Tyliko] Maduro they would like to search the car and it will only take ’30 seconds’. He explains that officers routinely check for drugs and illegal weapons, and if Maduro does not have any in the car, he will be fine…. Maduro does not step out of the car. After a few minutes, he turns on the engine, and the officer can be heard saying, ‘Dude, we got your name,’ before he speeds off. [Sheriff T.K.] Waters says officers did not follow Maduro because typically, police only give chase when there is a violent crime committed…. Maduro’s mother is seen quietly approaching the door [before dawn] with an officer, while another officer stays around the corner and [Officer Malik] Daricaud lingers behind…. After a few moments, she [unlocks and] opens the door…. At this point, Maduro can be seen with a gun in the back of the room, poised to shoot. Several shots are fired…. You can hear his mother telling him to put the gun down then three rounds of gunshots are fired at the officers — one striking [Officer] Daricaud. The SWAT team was called to the scene and Maduro continued to fire several shots. No shots were ever fired by any JSO officers. Waters said Maduro died by suicide. If the cops had just written the man a ticket for running the red light, he probably wouldn’t have driven off. And if they hadn’t opened his door before dawn, he wouldn’t have shot at them. Of course he should not have driven off, or shot at police officers, but his responses were the result of unnecessarily aggressive policing, which has become much more common since 9/11 for reasons that are not entirely clear. And now we have one man dead and another critically wounded over a traffic violation.

Saudi Arabia, China and U.S. lobbied to weaken U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. “… Saudi Arabia added caveats to protect fossil fuels and blocked language that stressed the limits of sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The U.S. tried to delete a sentence about climate finance gaps and cut the word ‘equitable’ from a line about access to international finance. China tried to cut the report’s most powerful finding from the text — that the world has 12 years to cut carbon pollution by two-thirds — but settled for putting the numbers in a table instead…. Though the reports are rigorous scientific studies, their political summaries must be signed off by 195 governments in fiercely contested approval processes. Delegates go through the document line-by-line, proposing changes that reflect their national agendas. Reformer Shawn Fain declared winner of United Auto Workers leadership election. “This election was not just a race between two candidates, it was a referendum on the direction of the UAW. For too long, the UAW has been controlled by leadership with a top-down, company union philosophy who have been unwilling to confront management, and as a result we’ve seen nothing but concessions, corruption and plant closures. Amid a shortage of serious threats, ‘fusion centers’ have become a ‘CIA for local police’. Fusion centers were intended to serve as hubs capable of sharing information to help detect and prevent future terrorist attacks. But the centers quickly morphed into vast systems of data collection to address any perceived crimes or hazards. In their earliest conception, fusion centers focused almost entirely on Muslim and Arab communities, targeting their places of worship and community activity. Over time, the centers broadened their focus to include other minority groups, particularly Black Americans…. There is no evidence that this style of surveillance has deterred terrorist attacks. Instead, evidence points to sharp increases in arrests for frivolous offenses such as riding a bicycle without a bell or for petty drug possession. In Camden, for example, [Rutger’s Center for Security, Race and Rights] report found that [charges] have risen rapidly — by nearly 100,000 in one year — since New Jersey’s fusion center was established, overwhelming the municipal court docket. Fusion centers also pose significant risks for First Amendment-protected activities. Obama White House official was fatally injured on private jet by malfunction, not turbulence. “The National Transportation Safety Board said the aircraft experienced a force about four times the pull of gravity when the pilots disabled a setting that is used to stabilize the aircraft. The pilots were in the process of resolving warning messages from the aircraft. ‘As soon as the switch position was moved, the airplane abruptly pitched up,’ the preliminary report said…. The plane pitched up and down like a roller coaster several times: First 3.8Gs up, then 2.3Gs downward, followed by 4.2Gs upward. The NTSB [has] previously said the violent movements ‘resulted in fatal injuries to a passenger’, who the Connecticut State Police identified as Dana Hyde. Hyde is a former Obama administration White House official who also worked at the State Department. The report does not specify whether Hyde was seated or wearing a seatbelt at the time…. The pilots had… aborted their first takeoff attempt because of an issue with the aircraft. They discovered a protective cover used when the aircraft is parked was left on the plane, the report said. After restarting the plane, they received additional alerts from the aircraft but proceeded with the takeoff and flight because the alerts did not meet the threshold for grounding. At the time of the incident, the pilots were attempting to resolve the issues by using a checklist for a failure of the primary stabilizer trim, the report said.”   https://edition.cnn.com/2023/03/24/us/turbulence-jet-death-ntsb/index.html

Congressional delegation tours D.C. jail holding Capitol riot defendants. “Republican House members claimed the Jan. 6 defendants are being deprived of due process, some medical care and services afforded to other jail inmates. On Wednesday, new court papers revealed that there was yet another informant in the Proud Boys’ orbit, one who became uncommonly close to people involved in the sedition trial. The newly disclosed informant, a Texas-based activist named ‘Jen Loh’, took part in prayer meetings with some of the defendants’ relatives and had multiple contacts with the defendants themselves while they have been in jail. She was also in touch with some of the defense lawyers in the case, making what one of them, Nicholas Smith, has called a ‘constant drumbeat’ of ‘detailed inquiries’, which Mr. Smith said he had ignored. Carmen Hernandez, another defense lawyer working on the case, described what Ms. Loh has been doing as a ‘surreptitious invasion’ of the Proud Boys’ defense team…. Prosecutors have insisted that they never asked Ms. Loh — whose real name is Jennylyn Salinas — to cozy up to the defendants, their relatives or their lawyers…. ‘It’s hard to see people calling me a rat and a fed and things like that,’ [Salinas] said. ‘I think it’s sad that we’ve gotten so polarized in this country.'”   https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/24/us/proud-boys-fbi-informants.html

Florida governor Ron DeSantis signs measure that limits lawsuits against businesses and insurance companies. “The new law, which took effect immediately, includes steps to try to limit litigation against businesses and insurance companies. It reduces from four years to two years a statute of limitations for filing negligence lawsuits and largely eliminates ‘one-way attorney’ fees that insurers can have to pay to cover the costs of plaintiffs’ lawyers…. Opponents said the law would do nothing to lower insurance premiums and would hurt people seeking compensation from businesses that have harmed them.”   https://www.orlandosentinel.com/politics/os-ne-desantis-signs-lawsuit-limitation-bill-20230324-635ypqf5cfhlffn3ffplcccalu-story.html

Minnesota nuclear power plant shuts down after failure to stop leak of radioactive water. “Xcel Energy started shutting down its Monticello nuclear power plant Friday after the company’s repair of a leaking pipe did not fully do the job — causing more radioactive water to seep into the ground. 19 reportedly killed in retaliatory strikes by U.S. forces in Syria. “The U.S. carried out strikes in eastern Syria in response to a drone attack on Thursday that left one American contractor dead, and another one wounded along with five U.S. troops. Washington said the attack was of Iranian origin. The retaliatory strikes by the U.S. on what it said were facilities in Syria used by groups affiliated to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps left a total of 19 dead, according to the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Ukrainian and Russian men fleeing conscription. “Ukraine is struggling to recruit soldiers as it prepares for a new offensive against Russia, with some young men spending the equivalent of thousands of dollars to flee the country, The Wall Street Journal reported…. Authorities in Ukraine said that more than 9,000 men left Ukraine in 2022 using documents for volunteers and aid workers…. young Ukrainian men have left by trying to cross borders on foot, enrolling in a university outside Ukraine, or [finding] work as a volunteer emergency aid driver…. Ukraine and Russia both guilty of executing and mistreating POWs. “The most recent report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is based on interviews with more than 400 POWs and focuses on how they were treated in the one-year period since Russia attacked Ukraine. Those interviewed include Ukrainian POWs who have been released as well as Russians held captive in Ukraine…. Instances under Russia’s control include the ‘summary executions of 15 POWs, the use of POWs as human shields, the deaths of two wounded men POWs due to a lack of medical care, and torture or other ill-treatment to extract information’, per the report…. Meanwhile, the monitors documented the summary executions of at least 25 Russian POWs at the hands of Ukrainian forces. ‘OHCHR also documented cases of torture or other forms of ill-treatment against 113 POWs, many of them involving beatings, kicking or, to a lesser extent, stabbing,’ the report says.”   https://www.axios.com/2023/03/24/un-report-russia-ukraine-pows   I apparently lost my blue ‘verified’ checkmark on Twitter for posting a story about abuses committed by both sides several months ago.

Estimated 1,619 banks could fail if depositors pull out their uninsured money. “Economists at Stanford, University of Southern California, Columbia and Northwestern found that because of rising interest rates hurting the value of certain assets such as bonds, U.S. banks hold $2 trillion less in assets than they appear to have on paper. As a result, the study found, some banks would not survive a scenario in which many customers withdrew some or all of their uninsured deposits. These banks would find themselves in the position of Silicon Valley Bank, unable to cover mass withdrawals and subject to government takeover, researchers warn. The study, which is based on data covering more than 4,800 U.S. banks, found that 1,619 banks would be at risk of failing if all their uninsured deposits were withdrawn. In a scenario where half of uninsured investors withdraw their funds, 186 banks would be at risk, the study concluded.”   https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2023/03/24/svb-bank-study/

Was CIA trying to recruit 9/11 hijackers? “The court filing details a five-year inquiry by an investigator for the Guantanamo Military Commission into whether the meeting at the Mediterranean Gourmet restaurant [between Omar al-Bayoumi, a Saudi intelligence asset, and 9/11 hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar] was an operation that involved not only Saudi agents but CIA officers as well. The theory that the CIA had launched a failed effort to recruit the hijackers through the Saudis has been around for years, and was always circumstantial at best, but the document obtained by SpyTalk reveals there is more evidence to support it. One former FBI agent claimed to the investigator that the CIA possesses top secret ‘operational’ files and a ‘paper trail’ about the Saudi spy who met the hijackers that are still being suppressed. A CIA spokesperson denied that the agency was hiding information. The FBI declined to comment…. Before 9/11, according to CS-23, the CIA was determined to get a human source inside Osama bin Laden’s terror network, and the arrival of two members of Al Qaeda in Southern California in January 2000 offered an unprecedented opportunity.”   https://www.spytalk.co/p/exclusive-fbi-agents-accuse-cia-of

Senate amendment to repeal 2001 AUMF defeated. “The Senate on Wednesday voted down an amendment introduced by Sen. Rand Paul to repeal the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) that was passed in the wake of the September 11 attacks to invade Afghanistan and is still used to justify wars today. The bill didn’t come close to passing and failed in a vote of 9-86, with only four Republicans, four Democrats, and one Independent supporting the legislation. The vote came ahead of the Senate voting on a repeal of the 1991 and 2002 Iraq AUMFs, which is a symbolic move as the authorizations are not used to wage war today.”   https://news.antiwar.com/2023/03/23/senate-votes-down-sen-rand-pauls-resolution-to-repeal-2001-aumf/

Police reportedly fired pepperballs into tent of slain ‘Cop City’ forest protector before alleged gun battle. “A police officer fired rounds from a pepperball gun into Manuel Paez Terán’s closed tent before an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of the environmental activist and injury of an officer, according to police incident reports obtained by the Guardian. Armed police in tactical gear killed the 26-year-old Paez Terán on the morning of 18 January as they swept through an Atlanta forest to clear activists who were camping there to prevent construction on a $90m police and fire department training facility known as ‘Cop City’…. Officers said Paez Terán was trespassing, then Paez Terán unzipped a small section of the tent door, looked out, and zipped the tent up again. The officer wrote that Paez Terán looked ‘angry’. When Paez Terán zipped up the tent, the officer said he gave the order to fire the pepperball gun…. [After a lawsuit was resolved in the group’s favor, the] Stop LAPD Spying Coalition then used the records to produce a website called ‘Watch the Watchers’ — a searchable database of every LAPD officer that includes their name, rank, serial number, photograph and work email…. ‘You can use it to identify officers who are causing harm in your community…. flipping the direction of surveillance against the state’s agents.’ …. ‘It became readily apparent that the Department had released, and not redacted, the names and photographs of officers engaged in sensitive investigative [i.e., undercover] assignments, placing their lives and the lives of their families in extreme jeopardy and peril,’ the police union wrote in a letter to the police commission on Monday.”   https://www.courthousenews.com/police-union-sues-activist-over-website-that-divulged-identities-of-numerous-undercover-lapd-officers/

Man still seeking justice after being severely beaten by FBI agent and police officer nine years ago in case of mistaken identity. “In 2014, [James] King was walking from one job to the next when [FBI agent Douglas] Brownback and [Grand Rapids detective Todd] Allen, who were not in uniform, accosted him without identifying themselves as law enforcement. ‘Are you mugging me?’ King asked. He then ran. The two officers, who were part of a police task force, responded by tackling him to the ground, beating his face to a pulp, and choking him unconscious. But they were looking for someone named Aaron Davison, who had been accused of stealing alcohol from his former employer’s apartment, and who, perhaps more importantly, looked nothing like King. Even still, police arrested King and handcuffed him to a hospital bed as he received treatment, despite the fact that the only malfeasance here was committed against, not by, King. Artificial intelligence will make it much harder for governments to censor information. “The Great Firewall is an information control system intended to censor and limit access to anything the Chinese government finds objectionable, with an emphasis on political speech. But that sort of censorship relies on the fundamental knowability of how search engines and websites function: Specific offending links, articles, publications, or programs can simply be [listed and] blocked by government authorities, leaving the rest of the internet accessible. In this architecture, censorship is possible because information-discovery processes are clear, and information itself is discrete and severable. An A.I., however, is much more of an all-or-nothing proposition…. the nature of [Large Language Model-style A.I., with its holistic, contextual, quasi-mysterious approach to synthesizing knowledge, will inevitably mean exposure to facts, arguments, ideas, and concepts that would have been censored under the Great Firewall.”   https://reason.com/2023/03/23/maybe-a-i-will-be-a-threat-to-governments/

Ohio deputies claim claim they’ve suffered emotional distress after rap artist used video of their unsuccessful raid on his home in his music videos. “Seven Adams County Sheriff’s deputies have filed a lawsuit against Afroman for using footage of them raiding his house in several music videos, FOX19 reports. U.S. and Canada reach agreement on turning back asylum seekers who cross border illegally. “The agreement is expected to allow officials on both sides of the border to turn back such asylum seekers [not crossing at designated border crossings] heading in either direction…. The deal is an amendment to the two sides’ 2004 Safe Third Country Agreement, which requires migrants to make an asylum claim in the first ‘safe’ country they reach, whether it is the US or Canada. The new arrangement would close a loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement that prevented Canada from turning away those crossing the border at unofficial crossing points. But there are now roughly 80 complaints against the company being litigated, and the labor board’s administrative law judges have started issuing official decisions on the cases.”   https://www.huffpost.com/entry/starbucks-workers-strike-shareholder-meeting_n_641b4cb6e4b0fef15247dc1f

Consumers paying tens of billions of dollars in ‘junk fees’ every year. “[President] Biden is pushing Congress to enact the Junk Fees Prevention Act — a first step in cracking down on extraneous surcharges attached to purchases like concert tickets, vehicle rentals and hotel reservations. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which is leading the charge in the drive against the fees, released an updated list of potentially illegal fees earlier this month…. ‘What research has shown is that when surcharges are dripped, consumers end up being more likely to buy a product that appears cheaper upfront based only on the base price, but that is more expensive in total given the dripped mandatory fees and fees for the selected optional add-ons.'”   https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/21/junk-fees-cost-consumers-tens-of-billions-annually-according-to-the-white-house.html

Bill that would require companies to inform consumers when products contain cameras, microphones or Wi-Fi connections introduced in Senate. “‘It’s estimated that by 2026, over 84 million households will have smart devices – providing connection and control over everything from your air conditioning to your air fryer,’ [Senator Maria Cantwell] said. ‘Yet, most consumers expect their refrigerators to keep the milk cold, not record their most personal and private family discussions. I’m happy to work with Senator Cruz on a bill that will ensure consumers know whether their household appliances are capable of invading their privacy.’ …. It applies to smart appliances such as televisions, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators – but not mobile phones, laptops, or other devices for which the owner reasonably expects to see recording devices.”   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11892967/Your-refrigerator-spying-Senate-committee-clamps-smart-devices.html   The House has already passed a version of the bill. I would imagine that such functionalities would be touted as features, not concealed from consumers, but who knows.

Federal appeals court dismisses ballot hurdle case of independent Illinois candidate. “[David] Gill attempted a run to represent Illinois’ former 13th Congressional District in 2016 as an independent, but he and several of his volunteers found that they struggled to meet the state’s requirements for getting an independent name on the ballot. In order to run as an independent in Illinois congressional races, a candidate needs to gather a total number of signatures from registered voters in their district that equals or exceeds 5% of the total number of those who voted in the most recent general election. In 2016 this translated to about 10,750 signatures, which couldn’t be collected more than 90 days before the last date for filing a candidate petition…. [Gill and his supporters] pointed out that compared to the 5% of district voter signatures which independents were required to collect, Democratic and Republican candidates only needed the signatures of 0.5% of primary voters in their district…. ‘While this litigation was pending, Illinois adopted a redistricting plan that changed the boundaries of the 13th District,’ [Judge Michael] Brennan wrote for the panel. ‘Because that district’s geographic features have changed, this court can no longer offer Gill any effectual relief.'”   https://www.courthousenews.com/seventh-circuit-tosses-challenge-to-illinois-ballot-rules/

Former CDC director questions ‘raccoon dog’ coronavirus theory. “‘What they showed is they could have DNA from raccoon dogs on swabs that also had the COVID-19 virus. It’s not unusual for animals to be infected as opposed to being the intermediate reservoir.’ [Robert] Redfield proceeded to criticize both Anthony Fauci—former COVID-19 adviser to the White House and a key figure at the National Institute of Health (NIH)—and the national news media for stigmatizing the theory that the virus may have emerged as the result of a lab accident rather than animal spillover. ‘I think the whole approach, particularly by the leadership of NIH, was antithetical to science,’ he said. ‘I stand by my testimony, and I know Dr. Fauci has some disagreement. But he’s incorrect.’ Both hypotheses should be pursued and vigorously investigated, according to Redfield…. ‘There’s a strong bias, in my view, toward trying to promote a spillover hypothesis rather than having honest scientific debate,’ said Redfield.”   https://reason.com/2023/03/20/robert-redfield-interview-fauci-lab-leak-covid-nih-raccoon-dogs/   Because the U.S. was funding ‘gain of function’ research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and a lab leak would be embarrassing, and potentially costly if litigated?

Los Angeles public schools support staff go on strike. “A union representing 30,000 Los Angeles school custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and other support staff has started a three-day strike with support from the district’s teachers, effectively stopping classes for more than a half million students in the nation’s second-largest school system…. Workers’ average salary is $25,000 a year, and most work part-time – which has led to staffing shortages, [Service Employees International Union Local 99] said.”   https://edition.cnn.com/2023/03/21/us/lausd-seiu-local-99-strike/index.html

President Biden establishes three new protected areas. “Biden designated Avi Kwa Ame (ah-VEE’ kwa-meh) [aka Spirit Mountain], a desert mountain in southern Nevada that Native Americans consider sacred, as a national monument, along with the Castner Range in El Paso, Texas. He also moved to create a national marine sanctuary in U.S. waters around the Pacific Remote Islands.”   https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/texas-news/president-biden-to-designate-national-monuments-in-texas-nevada-pacific-ocean/3219233/

President Biden vetoes bill that would have restored virtual ban on ESG 401(k) plans. “It doesn’t appear there are enough congressional votes to override the veto…. The Trump-era Labor Department rule doesn’t explicitly call out or forbid [Environmental, Social and Governance] funds in 401(k) plans. But experts say the rule stymied uptake due to a general requirement that employers only use ‘pecuniary factors’ when choosing 401(k) funds for workers. Those factors restrict fund analysis to purely financial measures, such as fund fees, return and risk, experts said. Environmental, social and governance factors are generally ‘non-pecuniary’, however.”   https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/21/biden-veto-401k-rule-esg-investment-funds.html

Trans woman committed suicide during Ballard, Washington eviction, claims medical examiner. “Records show the 29-year-old went only by one name, Eucytus, and usually went by Eucy. The medical examiner ruled Eucy’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head…. No other gunshot wounds or injuries were discovered during the autopsy…. King County sheriff’s Detective David Easterly was hospitalized after the exchange of gunfire Monday morning at a Ballard apartment building while he and two other deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice. Easterly remained in critical condition Tuesday, according to hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg. ‘Don’t say gay’ legislator pleads guilty to pandemic loan fraud charges. “Former Republican Florida state Rep. Joseph Harding, who sponsored the ‘Don’t Say Gay‘ bill, pleaded guilty Tuesday to wire fraud, money laundering, and making false statements in connection with COVID relief fraud, according to a Department of Justice press release. Harding illegally obtained more than $150,000 in pandemic loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA) by lying on an Economic Injury Disaster Loan for one of his dormant business entities, per the department.”   https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/joseph-harding-dont-say-gay-sponsor-pleads-guilty-covid-relief-fraud-1234701402/

Oklahoma’s highest court rules that the state’s constitution guarantees women the right to an abortion when their lives are at risk. “Its 5–4 decision invalidated a provision of Oklahoma’s near-total abortion ban and preserved the possibility of finding a more expansive right to reproductive autonomy in a future case. The ruling allows physicians to provide an abortion ‘at any point in the pregnancy’ whenever they determine, with ‘a reasonable degree of medical certainty’, that denying care would ‘endanger the woman’s life’.”   https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/03/oklahoma-supreme-court-lifesaving-abortions.html

Senior citizens (and others) protest at banks making fossil fuel loans. “When customers of America’s four largest banks visit their local branches on Tuesday, they might be greeted by an unfamiliar sight: activists in rocking chairs blocking the entrances. It’s part of a national campaign to pressure banks to stop financing fossil fuels and heed warnings from leading scientists about the need to rapidly phase out oil, gas and coal to avert the worst effects of climate change…. Caught in the middle are four banks — JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citibank and Wells Fargo — that rank as the world’s largest lenders to the fossil fuel industry, according to a report released last year by Rainforest Action Network and other environmental groups.”   https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/03/21/climate-banks-protest-fossil-fuels/

Residents of ‘Cancer Alley’ sue local government over chemical plants located in minority-populated areas. “Filed on Tuesday in the U.S. Eastern District Court in New Orleans, the lawsuit claims that [St. James] parish [Louisiana] officials have ‘intentionally chosen to locate over a dozen enormous industrial facilities in the majority Black 4th and 5th Districts, while explicitly sparing White residents from the risk of environmental harm.’ The lawsuit calls for what would be the state’s first ban on petrochemical plants…. ‘Over and over, St. James Parish has ignored our cries for basic human rights,’ said Shamyra Lavigne of Rise. ‘Enough is enough.'”   https://www.nola.com/news/environment/residents-sue-st-james-parish-to-halt-chemical-plants/article_f58c1874-c81b-11ed-b139-1bf311d01fb5.html   “They specifically point to a 2014 land use plan issued by their parish, the Louisiana equivalent of a county, which designated majority-black areas as places where industry could develop, according to the lawsuit. The suit also says that the plan protected Catholic churches but left Baptist churches vulnerable to pollution, ‘which made the discrimination compound – religious and racial – and thus doubly unlawful.’ The suit also said that the parish has approved every request by heavy industry to put facilities in majority-Black areas, but hasn’t approved a request to do the same in majority-white areas in 46 years.”   https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/3911118-cancer-alley-residents-say-they-are-victims-of-environmental-racism-in-new-lawsuit/

Eighth political prisoner dies in an Egyptian prison in three months. “A former member of parliament died in an Egyptian prison on Monday in the third death in less than 48 hours and the eighth this year, a rights group told Middle East Eye. According to the Committee for Justice (CFJ), the octogenarian detainee and former parliamentarian Ragab Mohamed Abu Zeid Zair died after his health deteriorated in his prison cell. Zair was elected as a member of the first democratically elected parliament after the 2011 revolution, representing the Shebeen al-Kum constituency in Menofia governorate. Residents of Texas town find out they are under surveillance. “At a city council meeting in June 2021, Mayor Thomas Kilgore, of Lakeway, Texas, made an announcement that confused his community. ‘I believe it is my duty to inform you that a surveillance system has been installed in the city of Lakeway,’ he told the perplexed crowd. Kilgore was referring to a system consisting of eight license plate readers, installed by the private company Flock Safety, that was tracking cars on both private and public roads. Despite being in place for six months, no one had told residents that they were being watched. Kilgore himself had just recently learned of the cameras…. The deal to install the cameras had not been approved by the city government’s executive branch. Instead, the Rough Hollow Homeowners Association, a non-government entity, and the Lakeway police chief had signed off on the deal in January 2021, giving police access to residents’ footage. By the time of the June city council meeting, the surveillance system had [alerted] the police department over a dozen times.”   https://theintercept.com/2023/03/22/hoa-surveillance-license-plate-police-flock/

Progressive Democrats urge Treasury Secretary Yellen to crack down on trusts. “Four U.S senators this week called on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to use her existing authority to go after American billionaires and multimillionaires who ‘use trusts to shift wealth to their heirs tax-free, dodging federal estate and gift taxes.’ ‘They are doing this in the open: Their wealth managers are bragging about how their tax dodging tricks will be more effective in the current economy,’ stressed Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.)…. ‘The ultrawealthy at the top of the socioeconomic ladder live by different rules than the rest of America, especially when it comes to our tax system,’ the letter charges. ‘As the richest Americans celebrate and take advantage of these favorable tax opportunities, middle-class families struggle with inflation and Republicans threaten austerity measures…'”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/yellen-treasury-rich-tax-dodgers

Dept. of Labor sues company over scheme that requires employees to pay back wages if they leave before three years of employment. “Biden’s Department of Labor (DOL) says in a complaint filed against Advanced Care Staffing (ACS) and CEO Sam Klein in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York that ‘in flagrant disregard’ of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the company ‘has entered into contracts purporting to require employees to complete at least three years of full-time work for ACS in order to retain their wages.’ ‘The contracts warn employees that if they leave ACS’s employ before three years’ time, they will face ACS and its lawyers in an arbitration behind closed doors, where ACS will demand that employees kick back much of their hard-earned wages—including wages to which they are entitled under federal law,’ the complaint continues.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/biden-labor-advanced-care-staffing

Use of depleted uranium projectiles in Ukraine would create serious health risks. “Fired from tanks, aircraft, and field artillery, DU rounds—which are extremely dense—are ideal for piercing hardened armor. However, the exploding shells produce radioactive dust that contaminates soil, water, and air for many years. U.S. Army training manuals warn that DU contamination ‘will make food and water unsafe for consumption’ and requires soldiers to wear protective clothing when in or near contaminated areas. U.S. and allied forces fired DU munitions during the 1991 and 2003-11 invasions of Iraq, and in Syria during the campaign against Islamic State. Miscarriages, birth defects, and cancers soared in Iraq after both wars. According to one study, more than half of the babies born in Fallujah between 2007 and 2010 had birth defects. Among pregnant women in the study, over 45% experienced miscarriages in the two-year period following the battles for Fallujah. Geiger counter measurements of DU-contaminated sites in Iraqi cities have consistently shown radiation levels 1,000 to 1,900 times greater than normal.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/depleted-uranium-ukraine
