Comet comedy Don’t Look Up spoofs climate crisis. “By now, the imminent collision with comet Diabasky is confirmed by scientists around the world. After political winds shift, the president initiates a mission to divert the comet, but changes her mind at the last moment when urged to do so by a billionaire donor (Mark Rylance) with his own plan to guide it to a safe landing, using unproven technology, in order to claim its precious metals…. After 15 years of working to raise climate urgency, I’ve concluded that the public in general, and world leaders in particular, underestimate how rapid, serious and permanent climate and ecological breakdown will be if humanity fails to mobilize…. Julian Assange appeals his extradition to the U.S. “The assurances [given by the U.S. to the U.K. court] contain an error, perhaps by design, saying that ‘pre-trial’ Assange would not be held at [Florence, Colorado supermax prison] ADX, which is only a post-conviction facility. So at this point it is up to the High Court judges Lord Chief Justice Ian Duncan Burnett and Lord Justice Timothy Holroyde to find that their own judgment raised a point of ‘law of general public importance’ for Assange’s application to appeal to the Supreme Court to go ahead…. Report outlines Republican Party efforts to undermine fair elections. “As we look toward 2022, we anticipate the anti-democratic strategy will consist of four key pillars: (i) changing the rules to make it easier to undermine the will of the voters; (ii) changing the people who defend our democratic system by sidelining, replacing, or attacking professional election officials; (iii) promoting controversial constitutional theories about our elections to justify partisan takeovers; and (iv) eroding public confidence and trust in elections,” the analysis notes. “These four pillars are the foundation for election sabotage, contrary to the will of the voters.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/2021/12/24/report-spotlights-massive-gop-push-hijack-elections-country
