Biden administration proposes development of new nuclear weapon. “The US military has announced it will try to develop a new nuclear bomb more than 20 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in August 1945 that led to the end of World War II. A Defense Department fact sheet says the new weapon, dubbed the B61-13, would have a blast yield similar to the B61-7 bomb’s 360 kilotons of TNT. By comparison, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima had a blast yield of 15 kilotons of TNT — making the new bomb 24 times more powerful. The creation of the B61-13 must first be approved and funded by Congress. ….’Since coming into office, the Biden Administration has taken a balanced approach between maintaining a safe, secure and effective nuclear deterrent and strong and credible extended deterrence, and taking those steps needed to the reduce the global salience of nuclear weapons and bring us closer to a world without nuclear weapons,’ a National Security Council spokesperson told The Post Monday.”   https://nypost.com/2023/10/30/news/us-wants-nuke-24-times-more-powerful-than-one-dropped-on-japan/   Scanned several other stories, nothing about what this is projected to cost.

Only a slim chance remains of staying below 1.5 C in global warming say scientists. “At the imminent UN Cop28 climate summit in the United Arab Emirates there are likely to be disputes over calls for a phaseout of fossil fuels. The analysis found the carbon budget remaining for a 50% chance of keeping global temperature rise below 1.5C is about 250bn tonnes. Global emissions are expected to reach a record high this year of about 40bn tonnes. To retain the 50% chance of a 1.5C limit, emissions would have to plunge to net zero by 2034, far faster than even the most radical scenarios. The current UN ambition is to cut emissions by half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, although existing policies are far from delivering this ambition. If it was achieved, however, it would mean only about a 40% chance of staying below 1.5C, the scientists said, so breaking the limit would be more likely than not. ….Dr. Chris Smith, at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria, who was also part of the study, said: ‘Governments can control the emissions but, at the moment, they have not done so. This is why we have an ever-shrinking carbon budget.'”   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/oct/30/climate-crisis-carbon-emissions-budget

Mourners at funeral in Iran for 16-year-old Armita Garavand reportedly beaten and arrested. “Iranian authorities have arrested a prominent lawyer and human rights defender as she attended the funeral of a teenage girl who died after a disputed metro incident, her husband has said. ….Journalists attempting to report on the funeral also claimed that Iranian security forces attacked, beat and arrested mourners and protesters who had gathered outside the Behesht-e-Zahra cemetery, where Garavand’s family had gathered to bury their daughter. ….Garavand’s case was first reported on 3 October by the Kurdish-focused rights group Hengaw, which said she had been critically wounded during an incident on the Tehran metro involving Iran’s ‘morality police’ [who allegedly attacked her for not wearing a hijab]. United Auto Workers and General Motors reach tentative labor deal. “Tentative agreements struck with Ford, Stellantis and GM each called for a roughly 25% raise over four years, as well as significant improvements on pensions and the right to strike plant closures. In a statement on Monday, the UAW celebrated the tentative deal with GM, calling it a ‘historic tentative agreement that paves the way for a just transition and wins record economic gains for autoworkers.'”   https://abcnews.go.com/Business/general-motors-reaches-tentative-deal-end-strike-uaw/story?id=104476323   Average wages and benefits for Big Three autoworkers will rise to about $90 an hour, $35 to $45 an hour more than non-union workers. “At Tesla and foreign car companies, that same hourly labor cost sits between $45 and $55 per hour, industry experts estimate. ….These huge cost increases are likely to be tough for Ford, GM, and Stellantis to swallow, and some of that cost may be passed on to customers, analysts predict. …The wins the UAW notched in this strike could reverberate across the industry if the union can use these contracts to aid in organizing efforts at companies like Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen. ….’Workers at Tesla, Toyota, Honda, and others are not the enemy—they’re the UAW members of the future,’ Fain said last month.”   https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-gm-stellantis-pay-raise-uaw-contract-tesla-labor-costs-2023-10

CIA may never have to give up its JFK assassination secrets. “As the 60th anniversary of JFK’s assassination approaches, the CIA has gained control of the historical record. As a result, the most important Kennedy files might never be seen, leaving unanswered the question of the exact nature of the agency’s interest in Lee Harvey Oswald. Was the CIA merely incompetent in dealing with the itinerant Marxist Marine, or did it use him for some still-classified purpose? Or is there another explanation for its unwillingness to share all it knows? The clandestine service is no longer under any obligation to answer such questions. When it comes to the Kennedy assassination files, the CIA has won the battle over full disclosure. ….The released records showed that former CIA director Allen Dulles compromised the Warren Commission’s investigation by shielding the agency’s operations around Oswald from scrutiny. Counterintelligence chief James Angleton sought to ‘wait out’ the commission by denying it key cables about the alleged assassin. And then-Deputy Director Richard Helms testified, falsely, that the agency had only ‘minimal information’ about Oswald before Kennedy was killed. ….In 2017, President Donald Trump let the JFK Records Act’s 25-year deadline for full disclosure slip. While proclaiming that the Kennedy files had been released, Trump acquiesced to the agency’s demand to keep portions of more than 11,000 documents secret. In 2021, President Biden did the same, while giving the CIA another year to release additional information. The National Archives now says that all Kennedy assassination files have been released — with the exception of no fewer than 3,648 documents that still contain redactions. No one knows when the American people will see these records, if ever.”   https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/10/31/jfk-assassination-cia-files-full-disclosure/

Family of man fatally shot by Tennessee police officer while attempting to flee traffic stop sues. “Last November, 39-year-old Eric Allen reportedly drove away from a traffic stop with a Mt. Juliet police officer trapped inside the car. Lawyers for Eric’s family said in a press conference on Monday, Oct. 30 that the officer should never have gotten in the car in the first place. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said Eric was sitting in the passenger seat when the female driver was pulled over by two Mt. Juliet officers and asked to get out of the vehicle. Moments later, Eric was also asked to step out, but police body camera video shows Allen sliding into the driver’s seat and starting to drive away. However, Sgt. Josh Lo managed to get in the car and repeatedly asked Eric to stop while using his stun gun on him. ….According to [family attorney Todd] Yeary, the officer then shot Allen in the back… ‘at least three times’.”   https://www.wkrn.com/news/local-news/family-of-man-killed-in-mt-juliet-officer-involved-shooting-files-wrongful-death-lawsuit/

According to The Times of Israel, Israeli government officials are downplaying the document, saying it only represents ‘initial thoughts’ and that they are currently focused on the war effort. The proposed plan would involve pushing the [2.3 million] Palestinians out of Gaza into Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. They would first live in tent cities until permanent structures are built. Israel embarking on a destructive ‘forever war’ warns journalist. “The unambiguous lesson of the War on Terror is that a war that lasts for a decade is not a war its architects understand how to win. In Iraq and Afghanistan, US generals equated maintaining the war with winning it, and the only results were death, suffering, and failure. Israel’s recent wartime experiences with comparable endeavors are no more promising. Two decades of occupying southern Lebanon did not destroy the Palestine Liberation Organization. Nor did Israel’s return to war in Lebanon in 2006… meet its objective of destroying Hezbollah, which today threatens to open a second front on Israel’s northern frontier. All Israel accomplished was the killing of human beings in great numbers, and the creation of motivated, experienced enemies that often grew in strength. It requires willful disregarding of extremely recent history to believe that an invasion of Gaza will end any other way.”  https://www.thenation.com/article/world/biden-israel-september-11-mistakes/

While ABC World News TonightCBS Evening NewsNBC Nightly News and PBS NewsHour aired a total of 105 segments primarily about Israel/Gaza and broader repercussions of the conflict, only eight segments included the word ‘ceasefire’ or some form of the word ‘de-escalate’. ….Only twice across all nightly news shows did viewers see anyone, guest or journalist, advocating for a ceasefire—both times on PBS NewsHour. ….CNN on a few occasions featured a guest advocating a ceasefire, such as Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, the leader of the Palestinian National Initiative party.”   https://fair.org/home/in-hours-of-israel-gaza-crisis-coverage-a-word-youll-seldom-hear-ceasefire/

Human rights group blasts U.S. responses to U.N. Human Rights panel’s questions about torture and indefinite detention programs. “On Oct. 17 and 18, the United States appeared before United Nations Human Rights Committee as part of the fifth periodic review of U.S. compliance with its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). ….Our focus was the United States’ failure to reckon with human rights abuses it perpetrated (and in some cases continues to perpetrate) after the September 11, 2001, attacks — in particular, U.S. torture, and indefinite detention at Guantanamo Bay that continues to this day. ….By our count, the Committee asked over 20 questions related to U.S. torture and/or the Guantanamo detention facility, across three separate interventions. With limited exception, the U.S. delegation either didn’t respond at all, or gave answers that contradicted U.S. obligations under the ICCPR. ….On issues related to post-9/11 U.S. torture, the Committee asked if the United States plans ‘to thoroughly investigate the human rights violations resulting from the [CIA torture] program and to publicly post its findings?’ Specifically, whether perpetrators would be ‘held accountable and punished’, including – where evidence supports it – through prosecutions? On secrecy, the Committee asked whether the United States. would declassify (to the extent necessary) and publicly disclose the final report prepared by Assistant U.S. Attorney John Durham, who from 2008–2012 conducted a narrow and limited criminal investigation into the CIA torture program, after which he concluded no charges should be brought against anyone. The Committee also asked whether the United States plans to declassify and release the full, nearly 7,000-page report culminating the Senate Intelligence Committee’s years-long investigation into CIA the torture program? And if not, then would the United States ‘at least allow security cleared counsel for detainees to have access to the report?’ Finally, the Committee asked ‘what legal remedies are available to individuals who were detained for years even decades, sometimes without facing a trial?’ ….Not once did any U.S. official even reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the prohibition on torture. The 2021 report isn’t any better; it similarly recites the laws that prohibit torture and/or, at least in theory, allow victims to seek remedies. This marks a significant regression from a decade ago, when the United States at least substantively engaged on many of these issues (even if not fully to our satisfaction). ….Far from taking the opportunity to renew its commitment to human rights and international law on this issue set, the United States instead waffled its way through inapposite remarks or simply disregarded the Committee’s questions entirely, perhaps hoping there would be no follow-up.”   https://www.justsecurity.org/89739/us-regresses-on-torture-and-guantanamo-at-treaty-review/

Socialist priest in South Dakota led push for citizen-originated ballot measures. “The practice of citizen-originated ballot measures began 125 years ago when South Dakota became the first in the nation to enact a statewide initiative and referendum process. More states followed, and the movement giving voters lawmaking powers grew far bigger than the Rev. Robert W. Haire’s spirited advocacy for it. ….Nearly 75% of South Dakotans called citizen ballot initiatives critical to the democratic process in a 2021 statewide poll, and almost 62% opposed making it harder. ‘It represents for me the fundamental idea of the equal dignity of every human being,’ said [activist Cory] Heidelberger, who blogs about South Dakota politics. ….South Dakota’s initiative and referendum came about during an agrarian populist movement. Democrats also pushing tax cuts for the rich. “… while Democrats profess their devotion to social justice and fight against income inequality, they often push for policies that favor the rich. No-protest laws now protect 60% of U.S. fossil fuel infrastructure. “Around 60% of oil and gas infrastructure in the U.S. is now shielded by anti-protest laws that make direct action much riskier for activists and frontline communities who want to protect their local and global home from dangerous pollution, a new Greenpeace report has found. The report, Dollars vs. Democracy 2023: Inside the Fossil Fuel Industry’s Playbook to Suppress Protest and Dissent in the United States, reveals that fossil fuel companies made up nine of the 10 most determined lobbyists for anti-protest measures since 2017 and that 25 oil, gas, coal, and energy companies contributed more than $5 million to legislators who sponsored these laws. ‘….activists should not face extreme, life-altering legal risks for putting their bodies on the line to keep our planet habitable. Federal Reserve issues new U.S. wealth distribution report. “The [Survey of Consumer Finances] is the nation’s preeminent survey of wealth and comes out once every three years. ….The top 10 percent of households [now] own 73 percent of the nation’s wealth, while the bottom 50 percent of households own just 2 percent of the nation’s wealth. ….Some people seem to think that overall wealth inequality is just a function of the fact that young adults own relatively little while older adults own much more. But this is not the case, as we see similar kinds of wealth inequality within each age group. ….Around 39 percent of the bottom half, which collectively owns 2 percent of household wealth, are over the age of fifty. ….Some people also seem to think that overall wealth inequality is also driven by racial wealth inequality. But, as with age, we see that wealth inequality within each racial group mirrors wealth inequality overall. ….the bottom of the wealth distribution is still thoroughly multiracial. Indeed, around 61 percent of the bottom half is white. ….as with age and race, we see the same kind of inequality within each educational group as we see in society as a whole. ….around one in four individuals in the bottom half of the wealth distribution have college degrees. ….The fact that we see the same wealth distribution over and over again no matter how we slice the data is a pretty solid indicator that this particular distributive skew is driven by the rules of our economic system, not a contingent issue with one group or another.”   https://jacobin.com/2023/10/wealth-inequality-us-demographics-survey-of-consumer-finances

Pennington spent eight years in the US Air Force as a ‘special missions aircraft maintainer’ and now works at Raytheon Missiles & Defense, where he also holds an ‘active secret clearance,’ according to his LinkedIn profile. As cops continue to hunt for the suspect, Breanne’s heartbroken family shared their shock at losing the ‘loving, caring, compassionate’ mother-of-four.”   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12665971/Aaron-Pennington-search-gardner-massachusetts-Breanne-shot-Raytheon.html

Multiple sources claim Ukraine and Russia reached tentative peace deal during early stage of conflict. “On June 13, 2023, taking questions from war correspondents at the Kremlin, Putin confirmed what had already been reported: that Russia and Ukraine had ‘reached an agreement in Istanbul’. Peace was possible. The tentative agreement would see Russia withdraw to its prewar position in exchange for a Ukrainian promise to give up its NATO aspirations. ….Putin’s claim that a tentative agreement could have stopped the war on terms that satisfied both Ukraine and Russia in the days before the massive Ukrainian loss of limb, life and land if not for US obstruction has now been verified by four independent sources. ….[Gerhard] Schröder’s newly published account of the Istanbul talks add to the evidence provided by Putin, Lavrov, [Naftali] Bennett and the Turkish officials [Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu  and ruling party chairman Numan Kurtulmus] that Ukraine and Russia might have arrived at a peace that satisfied both of their goals and avoided the horrid loss of life that has followed since had the US not intervened and put an end to the talks and the tentative agreement.”   https://original.antiwar.com/Ted_Snider/2023/10/23/the-mounting-evidence-that-the-us-blocked-peace-in-ukraine/

Scientists warn Earth headed for natural and socio-economic collapse. “‘Without actions that address the root problem of humanity taking more from the Earth than it can safely give, we’re on our way to the potential collapse of natural and socioeconomic systems and a world with unbearable heat and shortages of food and fresh water,’ [researcher Christopher] Wolf said in a statement. ….’It is a moral duty of scientists and our institutions to alert humanity of any potential existential threat and to show leadership in taking action,’ [Prof. William] Ripple said. ….Wolf said that as many as three to six billion people may find themselves outside the Earth’s livable regions by the end of the century, ‘meaning they will be encountering severe heat, limited food availability and elevated morality events.'”   https://www.courthousenews.com/scientists-sound-alarm-as-earth-reaches-uncharted-territory-with-climate-change/

Death toll in West Bank rises to 91. “Deadly violence has been surging in the West Bank as the Israeli military pursues Palestinian militants in the aftermath of the Hamas attack from Gaza, with more than 90 Palestinians killed in the Israeli-occupied territory in the past two weeks, mainly in clashes with Israeli troops. ….The Palestinian Health Ministry in the West Bank says 91 Palestinians have been killed there since Oct. 7. In the rest of the year leading up to the Hamas attack, 197 Palestinians were killed, according to an Associated Press count. As many as 600 Palestinian-Americans trapped in Gaza. “Americans in Gaza who contacted the State Department said that they were met with emails that detailed evacuation options for people in Israel, but little that was helpful for those stuck in the Palestinian territory. ….Some said they were sent a ‘crisis intake form’ by the U.S. Embassy in Egypt to fill out and submit, but that they were not contacted after that. ….Various reports that the [Rafah] crossing would open at a specific day and time repeatedly turned out to be incorrect. As already-slim food supplies dwindle, the masses of people gathered at the border crossing only grow.”   https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/20/up-to-600-americans-are-trapped-in-gaza.html

New York’s governor urged to sign, and to not sign, bill that would make it easier to find out who owns what. “A corporate lobbying group backed by Koch Industries is quietly pressing the Democratic New York governor, Kathy Hochul, not to sign a landmark transparency bill unmasking the owners of shell corporations…. High-profile real estate donors to Hochul’s campaign also oppose new disclosure requirements for limited liability companies, or LLCs, a notoriously opaque corporate structure that can thwart attempts at both civil and criminal law enforcement by concealing owners’ true identities. Hochul has yet to say whether she will sign the bill, passed by the New York legislature in June, requiring LLCs to report that information – and creating a first-in-the-nation database providing public access to it. Since taking office in 2021, Hochul has accepted nearly $2.1m in campaign contributions from real estate and other companies registered as LLCs, according to a Guardian review of state records. ….In 2019, transparency researchers concluded that all 50 US states required more personal information to obtain a library card than to create a company. New York’s bill, if signed, would provide the public with the legal name, business address and birth year of LLCs’ so-called ‘beneficial owners’ – the person or people ultimately controlling the entity – with waivers available in the case of legitimate safety or privacy concerns. ‘In the rest of the world, this is largely public information,’ said Erica Hanichak, the government affairs director at the Fact Coalition, a corporate-transparency group. ‘The public deserves to understand who owns and participates in their communities.'”   https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/oct/22/kathy-hochul-new-york-finance-real-estate-shell-corporations-llcs

U.N. says its relief efforts in Gaza may soon become impossible. “‘In three days, UNRWA will run out of fuel, critical for our humanitarian response across the Gaza Strip,’ said Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the United Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. ‘Without fuel, there will be no water, no functioning hospitals and bakeries,’ Lazzarini continued. ‘Without fuel, aid will not reach those in desperate need. Undercover DEA agents questioning and searching travelers at airports. “‘He just approached me, and he asked me for my ID,’ film director Tabari Sturdivant told Atlanta News First. ‘He didn’t state who he was. He just asked me for ID, and I thought he was a Delta agent. He had airport credentials on, and so I gave it to him immediately.’ Sturdivant, an Atlanta-based film director, was heading to L.A. for a film project when a group of task force officers walked up to him and requested to search his carry-on luggage in front of other passengers at his gate. The officers didn’t find anything illegal, but during the search, they asked if he was high or if he was carrying drugs and cash. ….Clayton County data that revealed 56 percent of jet bridge stops involved Black passengers, and 68 percent were people of color. The DEA stopped collecting race data 20 years ago. ….Most travelers are unclear of their rights when it comes to airport searches. In order to be admitted entry to the airport’s gated areas, passengers must submit themselves to TSA security screenings. ….However, the random searches by DEA agents at the Atlanta airport give passengers pause, but it should be noted that they’re not mandated. The DEA officially calls its stops and searches at airport gates ‘cold consent encounters’, and passengers are free to end the encounter and walk away if they’d like. However, others who have been searched at their boarding gates said they felt ‘coerced’, ‘pressured’, or gave consent ‘under duress’. One passenger recorded one of these encounters that showed a DEA agent using some coercive tactics. ‘You’re either going to sign a consent form saying that you’re allowing us to search [your bags],’ the drug agent is heard telling the passenger on the recording, ‘or I’m going to detain them, run my dog on it, and get a search warrant.’ The passenger immediately agreed to sign the consent form.”   https://atlantablackstar.com/2023/10/21/federal-drug-agents-seize-millions-from-passengers-at-atlanta-airport-while/   I’ve personally seen them doing this ON Amtrak trains. I thought it was a gang shaking down passengers, and alerted a conductor.

Israel allows 20 trucks with humanitarian aid into Gaza. “The border crossing between Egypt and Gaza opened Saturday to let a trickle of desperately needed aid into the besieged Palestinian territory for the first time since Israel sealed it off and began pounding it with airstrikes following Hamas’ bloody rampage two weeks ago. Just 20 trucks were allowed in, an amount aid workers said was insufficient to address the unprecedented humanitarian crisis. More than 200 trucks carrying 3,000 tons of aid have been waiting nearby for days. ….Hospitals say they are running low on medical supplies and fuel for emergency generators amid a territory-wide power blackout. Five hospitals have stopped functioning because of fuel shortages and bombing damage, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said. Doctors reported using sewing needles to stitch wounds, and using vinegar as a disinfectant until the shops ran out.”   https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-gaza-captives-border-aid-f5976ed58ba508f14d45b72b428125ac

Italy’s prime minister warns countries not to ‘fall into trap’ set by Hamas. “Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday that the international community must avoid an escalation in the war between Israel and Hamas and set a roadmap towards the two states solution. Meloni made the remarks while speaking in Egypt at the Cairo international summit for peace in the Middle East as Israel prepares a ground assault on Gaza following Hamas attack that killed 1,400 people. ‘Although our starting points are far apart, our interests overlap perfectly: that what is happening in Gaza does not become a much wider conflict, a religious war, a clash of civilisations,’ Meloni said speaking in Italian. ‘I have the impression that this was the real aim of the Hamas attack, not to defend the rights of the Palestinian people, but an attack that would create an unbridgeable gap between the Palestinians and the Israelis, meaning that the target is all of us, and we cannot fall into this trap, which would be very stupid.'”   https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/italys-meloni-urges-international-community-not-fall-into-hamas-trap-2023-10-21/

Think-tank analyst blames huge budget deficits and national debt on Republican tax cuts for the wealthy. “In response to the Treasury figures released Friday, Kogan said that ‘roughly 75%’ of the surge in the deficit and the debt ratio, the amount of federal debt relative to the overall size of the economy, was due to revenue decreases resulting from GOP-approved tax cuts over recent decades. ‘Of the remaining 25%,’ he said, ‘more than half’ was higher interest payments on the debt related to Federal Reserve policy [hiking interest rates]. ….’If not for the Bush tax cuts and their extensions—as well as the Trump tax cuts—revenues would be on track to keep pace with spending indefinitely, and the debt ratio (debt as a percentage of the economy) would be declining. Instead, these tax cuts have added $10 trillion to the debt since their enactment and are responsible for 57 percent of the increase in the debt ratio since 2001, and more than 90 percent of the increase in the debt ratio if the one-time costs of bills responding to COVID-19 and the Great Recession are excluded.'”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/trump-bush-tax-cuts-fuel-growing-deficits

Amnesty International accuses Israel of committing war crimes against civilians in Gaza. “Amnesty interviewed survivors and eyewitnesses, analyzed satellite imagery, and verified photos and videos to investigate the Israeli aerial bombardments of Gaza, documenting ‘unlawful Israeli attacks, including indiscriminate attacks, which caused mass civilian casualties and must be investigated as war crimes.’ Agnès Callamard, Amnesty’s secretary-general, said in a statement: ‘In their stated intent to use all means to destroy Hamas, Israeli forces have shown a shocking disregard for civilian lives. They have pulverized street after street of residential buildings killing civilians on a mass scale and destroying essential infrastructure, while new restrictions mean Gaza is fast running out of water, medicine, fuel, and electricity.'”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/israeli-war-crimes
