U.S. diplomat and presidential advisor Henry Kissinger dies at 100. “Kissinger helped to prolong the Vietnam War and expand that conflict into neutral Cambodia; facilitated genocides in Cambodia, East Timor, and Bangladesh; accelerated civil wars in southern Africa; and supported coups and death squads throughout Latin America. He had the blood of at least 3 million people on his hands, according to his biographer Greg Grandin. There were ‘few people who have had a hand in as much death and destruction, as much human suffering, in so many places around the world as Henry Kissinger,’ said veteran war crimes prosecutor Reed Brody. ….In 1973, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Kissinger and his North Vietnamese counterpart Le Duc Tho ‘for jointly having negotiated a cease fire in Vietnam in 1973.’ ….a pact that not only failed to stop that conflict but also was almost immediately violated by all parties.”   https://theintercept.com/2023/11/29/henry-kissinger-death/

Governor of Michigan signs ambitious clean energy bills. “On Tuesday afternoon, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a slate of new clean energy bills recently passed by the State House and Senate. These bills are designed to transition Michigan from a majority fossil-fuel-powered state into a national leader in renewable energy within the next two decades. ….’We are making it easier for landowners to build solar panels and wind turbines, and big batteries on their properties,’ Whitmer told those assembled for the bill signing ceremony. ….The new laws will also require utilities to generate 50% of their energy from renewable sources by 2030.”   https://www.wlns.com/top-stories/governor-set-to-sign-historic-energy-bills/

Bombing of Cambodia during Vietnam War killed as many as 150,000 civilians, according to recently discovered documents. “Henry Kissinger is responsible for more civilian deaths in Cambodia than was previously known, according to an exclusive archive of U.S. military documents and groundbreaking interviews with Cambodian survivors and American witnesses. ….Experts say Kissinger bears significant responsibility for attacks in Cambodia that killed as many as 150,000 civilians — six times more noncombatants than the United States has killed in airstrikes since 9/11.”   https://theintercept.com/2023/05/23/henry-kissinger-cambodia-bombing-survivors/

U.S. House Democrats question motives of national debt commission convened by Republicans. “Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), one of eight witnesses who testified at Wednesday’s hearing, said he was ‘a little skeptical’ that Republican lawmakers are now concerned about the national debt given that they have driven it up with tax cuts for the rich and large corporations in recent years—and are still trying to increase it. According to one analysis, the series of tax cuts approved under former Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump have added $10 trillion to the debt since their enactment and are responsible for the bulk of the increase in the debt ratio since 2001. Social Security, by contrast, is not a driver of federal deficits. ‘If we want to ensure long-term solvency [for Social Security], there are two choices: Some on the other side think we should cut benefits, I think we should ask the ultra-rich to pay their fair share.'”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/social-security-death-panel-hearing

The publication also identifies 30 countries where the United States ‘conducted formal, named military exercises to project force locally and rehearse scenarios of combating ‘terrorists’ or ‘violent extremist organizations,’ and 73 nations where the U.S. government ‘trained and/or assisted military, police, and/or border patrol forces.'”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/joe-biden-war-on-terror

Social media site Rumble sues advertising watchdog and Media Matters, making claims similar to those made by X in a separate lawsuit. “Filed in the Middle District of Florida, the suit accuses Check My Ads founders Nandini Jammi and Claire Atkin and Media Matters for America, a D.C. based ‘progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media’, of launching a ‘disinformation campaign to demonetize Rumble’. To do so, Rumble claims Jammi and Atkin spread false statements about its business practices, ad placements, and revenue streams, as well as publicly pressured advertisers to drop Rumble through articles published on CheckMyAds.org and posts on X, formerly Twitter. ….According to Rumble, in March 2023, Netflix stopped advertising on its site after Media Matters engineered it so that Netflix ads would appear on a user-generated video on Rumble expressing antisemitic views. ‘Media Matters staff repeatedly refreshed the user-generated video — in some cases, more than 70 times — causing Rumble’s advertising system to serve different advertisements until Media Matters found one that it could use as fodder for its public pressure campaign,’ Rumble says in its complaint. ‘As it turned out, the Media Matters employee engaging in this tactic was the only one to actually view the Netflix ad on the video. And once Rumble learned about this antisemitic content on its platform — a clear violation of Rumble’s content moderation policies — it immediately removed the video.'”   https://www.courthousenews.com/disinformation-watchdog-group-accused-of-spreading-false-statements-about-rumble/

Unnamed sources claim CIA is involved in UFO crash retrievals. “Three sources briefed on those alleged top secret operations told Daily Mail that the Office of Global Access (OGA), a wing of the Central Intelligence Agency’s Science and Technology Directorate, has played a central role since 2003 in orchestrating the collection of what could be alien spacecraft. The three sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals, have all been briefed by individuals involved in those alleged UFO retrieval missions. Though the shocking claims sound like they come from a science fiction novel, they are part of a growing body of evidence suggesting the US government could indeed be hiding advanced vehicles that were not made by humans. ….The source said the CIA has a ‘system in place that can discern UFOs while they’re still cloaked’, and that if the ‘non-human’ craft land, crash or are brought down to earth, special military units are sent to try to salvage the wreckage. Another source with knowledge of the OGA’s role said that they specialize in allowing the US military to secretly access areas around the world where they would usually be ‘denied’ – for example behind enemy lines. ‘They are basically a facilitator for people to get in and out of countries,’ the source said. ‘They are very clever at being able to get anywhere in the world they want to.'”   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12796167/CIA-secret-office-UFO-retrieval-missions-whistleblowers.html

Writer very skeptical that Ukraine blew up Nord Stream pipelines without U.S. help or approval. “… the idea that Ukraine’s senior command would have been able to, or dared, execute this complex and risky venture without involving the U.S. beggars belief. Politically, it would have been quite extraordinary for Ukrainian leaders to imagine they could unilaterally decide to shut down energy supplies to Europe without consulting with the U.S., especially when Ukraine’s entire war effort was being paid for and overseen by Washington and Europe. And of course, Ukrainian leaders would have been only too aware that the U.S. was bound to quickly work out who was behind the attack. In such circumstances, why would the Biden administration choose to reward Ukraine with more money and arms for its act of industrial sabotage against Europe rather than punish it in some way? Equally, the three states supposedly investigating the attack — Germany, Sweden and Denmark — would also have soon figured out that Ukraine was culpable. Why would they decide to cover up Ukraine’s attack on Europe’s economy rather than expose it…? And of course, there is the elephant in the room: The Washington Post’s earlier reporting indicated that the U.S. had prior knowledge Ukraine was planning the attack.”   https://consortiumnews.com/2023/11/29/the-nord-stream-lies-just-keep-coming/

Re-authorization of Section 702 surveillance program may be slipped into ‘must pass’ defense bill. “Republican and Democratic senior aides tell WIRED that word of private talks between the party leaders began to leak late last week, sparking concerns that House speaker Mike Johnson [R] and Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer [D] were mounting a last-ditch effort to rescue the program, known as Section 702, without the support of their rank-and-file members. ….Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) allows the government to warrantlessly surveil the communications of foreign citizens ‘reasonably believed’ to be overseas. While intelligence analysts cannot target legal US residents, they can and often do acquire the communications of Americans in contact with foreign surveillance targets. Section 702 targets are not limited to terrorists and criminals, and may include, for example, foreign officials, diplomats, and journalists—anyone whose calls, texts, or emails are believed to have intelligence value. ….An unlikely coalition of Republican and Democratic lawmakers was formed this year to oppose the intelligence community’s effort to obtain a clean reauthorization of the 702 program, which has been plagued by years of internal abuse at the National Security Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The program’s critics have put up a laundry list of potential reforms, many of which are vehemently opposed by the White House and intelligence community at large. ….A source familiar with the White House’s goals for the program tells WIRED it has encouraged Congress throughout the year to discuss potential privacy-enhancing reforms, while drawing a “red line” at demanding that the FBI obtain warrants before accessing raw 702 data for national security investigations.”   https://www.wired.com/story/section-702-reauthorization-ndaa-2023/   It’s unclear to me if any American in contact with someone in another country for any purpose is also subject to this program, or if Americans living abroad who are in contact with anyone anywhere are potential targets as well.

There are a lot of people crying, screaming with pain, but we don’t have enough analgesics. We keep them for the kids or very severe cases.’ ….Ley said he had been shocked at how passive many patients were, such as one 35-year-old woman whose husband and children had been killed when the family’s home was destroyed, and who appeared unmoved when told both her legs would need to be amputated. ‘So many just don’t care any more,’ he said.”   https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/nov/24/we-are-overwhelmed-southern-gazas-exhausted-doctors-forced-to-leave-children-to-die

Freed Palestinian teens say some of their fellow prisoners were beaten to death. “Palestinian children freed from Israeli jails as part of a prisoner exchange deal between Hamas and Israel said they were subjected to torture in captivity and that several fellow detainees were beaten to death. The teens are among 39 Palestinians freed from Israeli detention on Sunday, in the third prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas, while the latter released 13 Israelis held in Gaza. …. Omar al-Atshan, a freed Palestinian teen, said he was mistreated and tortured in Naqab prison where he had been held prior to his release. ….He said that they were routinely beaten and humiliated in prison, and that water and food were scarce.”   https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/israel-palestine-war-freed-palestinian-children-fellow-prisoners-tortured-death

Portland teachers’ union and public schools reach tentative labor deal. “The tentative deal outlines a nearly 13.8% cost-of-living adjustment over three years. The district initially proposed just shy of 11%, and [the Portland Association of Teachers] had proposed over 20%. Many Israeli civilians reportedly killed by their own armed forces during counter-attack against Hamas invasion. “Tuval Escapa, a member of the security team for Kibbutz Be’eri, set up a hotline to coordinate between kibbutz residents and the Israeli army. He told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that as desperation began to set in, ‘the commanders in the field made difficult decisions – including shelling houses [and] their occupants in order to eliminate the terrorists along with the hostages.’ A separate report published in Haaretz noted that the Israeli military was ‘compelled to request an aerial strike’ against its own facility inside the Erez Crossing to Gaza ‘in order to repulse the terrorists’ who had seized control. That base was filled with Israeli Civil Administration officers and soldiers at the time. These reports indicate that orders came down from the military’s high command to attack homes and other areas inside Israel, even at the cost of many Israeli lives. An Israeli woman named Yasmin Porat confirmed in an interview with Israel Radio that the military ‘undoubtedly’ killed numerous Israeli noncombatants during gun battles with Hamas militants on October 7. ‘They eliminated everyone, including the hostages,’ she stated, referring to Israeli special forces. ….A video posted by the Telegram account of Israel’s South Responders shows the bodies of Israelis discovered below the rubble of a home destroyed by a powerful explosive blast – likely a tank shell. ….The phenomenon of charred corpses whose hands and ankles had been tied, and who were found in groups beneath the rubble of destroyed homes, also [suggests] ‘friendly’ tank fire.”   https://thegrayzone.com/2023/10/27/israels-military-shelled-burning-tanks-helicopters/

Movements accused of actual antisemitism are backing Israel. “… US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr…. earlier this year repeated the conspiracy theory that Covid-19 was ‘targeted’ to spare Jewish and Chinese people. When he was accused of propagating antisemitism, which he denies, Kennedy chose to blast representatives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for insufficient support of Israel, saying that ‘criticism of Israel is a false narrative’ and ‘Israel is a shining star on human rights in the Middle East’. ….Marine Le Pen’s National Front in France, the AfD in Germany and Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party in Hungary all have given unequivocal support to Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Indeed, Netanyahu considers Orban a close ally and often tweets support for him. In the US, there is Donald Trump, whose election was heralded by antisemites’ [at the] biggest public rally in the US in a generation, the ‘Unite the Right’ rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Yet because Trump was also demonstrably pro-Israel in his foreign policy stances, notably moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, he receives ongoing support and endorsements from many pro-Israel pressure groups. ….This month Elon Musk agreed with a post on Twitter that said Jewish people have been pushing ‘dialectical hatred against whites’. ….Netanyahu didn’t bother to admonish Musk at all – the pair are friends, and Netanyahu has called him the ‘Edison of our time’ even after many examples of Musk giving a platform to antisemites.”   https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/nov/27/jewish-antisemitism-support-israel-gaza-zionism

President Biden asks Congress to remove restrictions on providing arms to Israel. “It concerns the War Reserve Stockpile Allies-Israel (WRSA-I) that the U.S. has stored in Israel since the 1980s for its own use in a potential conflict in the region. The U.S. allows Israel to access the stockpile under certain conditions, but Biden’s request would remove most of these conditions, including a requirement that Israel only use surplus or obsolete weapons and a cap on how much the U.S. can spend resupplying the stash. ‘The President’s emergency supplemental funding request would essentially create a free-flowing pipeline to provide any defense articles to Israel by the simple act of placing them in the WRSA-I stockpile, or other stockpiles intended for Israel,’ Josh Paul, a former State Department official who resigned over U.S. arm transfers to Israel in the midst of its bombardment of Gaza, told The Intercept. ….’The Biden administration’s supplemental budget request would further undermine oversight and accountability even as U.S. support enables an Israeli campaign that has killed thousands of children,’ John Ramming Chappell, a legal fellow with the Center for Civilians in Conflict, told The Intercept.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/biden-request-arms-israel

Defeat of U.K. government’s plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda bodes well for Julian Assange. “The [British] Supreme Court has said, unanimously, that judges had a positive duty to determine whether a country was safe for deportation, rather than simply take the word of ministers for it. This is a very strong piece of judicial activism. ….After reviewing the evidence, the court judged that Rwanda’s general human rights record, its past treatment of refugees and the state of its asylum system make it an unsafe country for deportation. It does not become a safe country either because the previous home secretary, Pritti Patel, and Suella Braverman say so, or – and this is crucial for the Assange case – because its government makes promises about future behaviour. ….The reason this is so vital to the Assange case, is that the court of first instance decided against Assange’s extradition, due to the combination of his health and the appalling maximum security conditions to which he would be subjected in the United States. On Appeal by the government of the U.S., Lord Chief Justice Burnett rejected this argument, primarily on the basis of diplomatic assurances as to Assange’s treatment, received in diplomatic notes submitted at the appeal stage. Because they were not submitted to the original hearing but only at Appeal, Assange’s team had no opportunity to question these diplomatic assurances or cross-examine on their value. Lord Chief Justice Burnett rejected this as having any weight, on the grounds that it was for the executive to decide the value of diplomatic assurances. Note that Lord Chief Justice Burnett was also the dissenting judge who found for the government at appeal in the Rwanda case, where again he argued that the diplomatic assurances from the Rwanda government should simply be accepted on the executive’s evaluation. That is the classic executive position in the whole diplomatic assurances debate – and the Supreme Court has just unanimously and fizzingly rejected Burnett’s argument.”   https://consortiumnews.com/2023/11/26/uks-rwanda-deportation-ruling-offers-assange-hope/

Crash survivor repeatedly tasered after traffic accident sues Florida deputies. “Police bodycam footage obtained by Daily Mail shows the 19-year-old passenger [Jordan Rivero] sobbing uncontrollably near the wrecked pick-up truck as he sits down on the orders of Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies. Disoriented and not under suspicion of any crime, he stumbles upright complaining he can’t breathe through his broken nose. But then deputies haul him down before another tussle in which he’s told ‘get on the f***ing ground’ – at which point deputy Dyllon Hansen fires his taser at the teenager’s stomach. ….[Rivero] lets out a piercing scream as he clutches his chest. His head smashes on the hard surface, rebounds and smacks down again as his body thrashes from the voltage. Officer Hansen’s bodycam footage shows the teenager continuing to be stunned with successive bursts of electricity as he howls in agony. ….Rivero was stretchered into an ambulance where he suffered a grand mal seizure, according to court documents in the case he has just brought against Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Rick Ramsay and three deputies including Hansen. ‘He had brain swelling and he suffered a traumatic brain injury,’ his attorney Dena Foman told [the Daily Mail]…. ‘He flatlined right after they got him in the ambulance at the scene.’ Rivero, now 20, was rushed to the Mariners Hospital in Tavernier. ‘But he needed an emergency tracheotomy as he got there and they had to slice his throat open in the parking lot,’ added the attorney. ‘He had to be resuscitated two or three times and he ended up in a coma. He is very lucky to be alive.’ Staff at the Mariners deemed Rivero’s injuries too severe for treatment there and he was airlifted to Kendall Hospital near Miami where he was put on a mechanical ventilator. ….Foman disputes a sheriff’s office report that Rivero punched O’Keefe before being tased, by saying: ‘On the bodycam footage there is nothing there’.”   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12763501/Bodycam-footage-Florida-cops-tase-teen-Jordan-Rivero-car-crash.html

In an interview with TV channel 1+1, a Ukrainian network, Arakhamia confirmed previous reporting that Moscow and Kyiv had nearly agreed to end the war in March 2022. Still, Ukraine’s Western backers pushed it to try to win the war against Russia. ‘They really hoped almost to the last moment that they would force us to sign such an agreement so that we would take neutrality,’ Arakhamia  said. ‘It was the most important thing for them. State Dept. official Josh Paul resigns over U.S. stance in Gaza conflict. “I decided to resign for three reasons, the first and most pressing of which is the very, I believe, uncontroversial fact that U.S.-provided arms should not be used to massacre civilians…. And that is what we are seeing in Gaza….Secondly, I also believe that… there is no military solution here. And we are providing arms to Israel on a path that has not led to peace, has not led to security, neither for Palestinians nor for Israelis. It is a moribund process and a dead-end policy. And… when I tried to raise both of these concerns with State Department leadership, there was no appetite for discussion, no opportunity to look at any of the potential arms sales and raise concerns about them, simply a directive to move forward as quickly as possible. Greenpeace report calls for alternatives to capitalism. “In a world wracked by polarization, inequality, climate change, ecological breakdown, and a crisis of hope and imagination, we can’t use the same thinking that created the problem in the first place. Greenpeace calls for governments and global institutions to drive their decision-making according to sufficiency and the well-being of people and planet, so that what we really value becomes the new measure of success, [which] can thrive and flourish across the world,” added Tejón Carbajal. “To create a sustainable and just future for all,” one section of the report concludes, “we must move beyond GDP and develop a measurement framework for wellbeing, inclusion, and sustainability.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/alternatives-to-capitalism-gdp   Some claim that socialism is inherently a more ecological economic system, but this is not actually the case because it is also a materialist philosophy that equates higher GDP with a better quality of life, and has also polluted and exploited the environment to increase material wealth – even though that wealth is, at least in theory, more equally shared by the members of society under a socialist system.

Federal court hears case of warrantless spying on Julian Assange’s American visitors at Ecuadoran embassy in London. “A United States court held an extraordinary hearing on November 16, where a judge carefully considered a lawsuit against the CIA and former CIA director Mike Pompeo for their alleged role in spying on American attorneys and journalists who visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Judge John Koeltl of the Southern District of New York pushed back when Assistant U.S. Attorney Jean-David Barnea refused to confirm or deny that the CIA had targeted Americans without obtaining a warrant. He also invited attorneys for the Americans to update the lawsuit so that claims of privacy violations explicitly dealt with the government’s lack of a warrant. ….The lawsuit alleged that as visitors [Charles] Glass, [John] Goetz, [Deborah] Hrbek, and [Margaret Ratner] Kunstler were required to ‘surrender’ their electronic devices to employees of a Spanish company called UC Global, which was contracted to provide security for the Ecuador embassy. UC Global and the company’s director David Morales ‘copied the information stored on the devices’ and shared the information with the CIA. The agency even had access to live video and audio feeds from cameras in the embassy.”   https://thedissenter.org/a-rare-court-hearing-lawsuit-cia-spying-assange-visitors/

Muslim-Americans and American political activists facing renewed, post 9/11-style government surveillance. “Protections against targeting Muslim Americans and other minority communities are still exceptionally weak. Earlier this year, the Justice Department updated its guidelines for law enforcement agencies’ use of characteristics such as race, religion, ethnicity and national origin. Although the new rules include some improvements (e.g., explicitly covering intelligence and other activities supporting law enforcement), they continue to allow targeting based on group characteristics rather than indications of individual wrongdoing—the very essence of the invidious profiling the rules claim to ban. ….These ventures have sowed fear and confusion among Muslim American communities, and unfortunately, the FBI may be following the same playbook again. In just the last few weeks, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee reports that it has received several reports of individuals and mosques being visited by the FBI. ….Expansive counterterrorism authorities have also been used to target and suppress political activism. When racial justice protests broke out across the country in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd, the Trump administration repeatedly tried to brand protests as the work of ‘Antifa’ domestic terrorists. Attorney General William Barr even activated the FBI’s 56 Joint Terrorism Task Forces to ‘identify criminal organizers and instigators’ among the protestors. As documented by Congress and both its general counsel and inspector general, DHS has also used its broad counterterrorism authorities to target the same protestors.”   https://www.justsecurity.org/90142/threat-from-within-unreformed-counterterrorism-infrastructure-raises-concerns-about-misuse/

X lawsuit claims Media Matters gamed its system to generate bogus pairings of antisemitic content and ads. “In the lawsuit filed in a U.S. District Court in Texas, X claimed Media Matters ‘manipulated’ the social media platform by using accounts that exclusively followed major brands or users known to produce fringe content, and ‘resorted to endlessly scrolling and refreshing’ the feed until it found ads next to extremist posts. Dept. of Energy lab hacked by furries. “SiegedSec, which also claimed to have breached NATO’s IT security on two occasions this year, said it has now hit Idaho National laboratory (INL), which is run by the US Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy. The lab has at least acknowledged its HR systems suffered a cyberattack. ….The self-styled furry hackers meanwhile have offered to remove the staff records [from Telegram] if the lab performs experiments that at best could be described as highly irregular. ‘We’re willing to make a deal with INL. If they research creating IRL catgirls we will take down this post,’ the group said. The creation of real cat-human female hybrids is a frequently posted meme in certain corners of the internet, but it’s not the laboratory’s specialty. Elderly couple sues Ogden, UT police over violent arrest in their own driveway. “According to the lawsuit against Ogden police, the two officers responded to the Briem house on Nov. 29, 2022, after someone in the neighborhood complained about squatters in the residence, claiming the home had been foreclosed. However, the Health Department had posted a non-occupancy sign for the home’s basement, the lawsuit said, adding that the couple had been living in the home’s detached garage. ….’Is this your residence?’ one of the officers asks. ‘Yeah, that’s my house, that’s my garage,’ Rand Briem responds, the video shows. ‘What are you doing?’ After a dispute about the non-occupancy sign, one of the officers tells Rand Briem that he is detaining him and requests to see his license. The 78-year-old responds saying he’ll show it to the police, but not give it to them. While Briem shows his license to one of the officers, the officer takes it. Briem starts yelling and tries to grab his license back, the video shows. A noisy struggle ensues before police get the man on the ground, with his hands behind his back and his face in the snow. Federal appeals court strikes down Maryland law that required residents to get a license before obtaining a pistol. “In a split 2-1 decision, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals found a portion of the state’s Firearm Safety Act of 2013 to be unconstitutional. That part of the law prohibits Marylanders from purchasing, renting or receiving a handgun unless they have received a valid handgun qualification license. It is also illegal to sell, rent, gift or transfer a firearm to a person without a license under that law. To receive a handgun qualification license, applicants must be Maryland residents aged 21 or older. They are required to pass a firearm safety course and undergo a background check to ensure they aren’t prohibited from owning a gun under state or federal law. The licenses are issued by the Maryland State Police. The application review process can take up to 30 days.”   https://www.baltimoresun.com/politics/bs-md-pol-fourth-circuit-overturn-guns-20231121-oraonacw3rh3dgx3njwnei5voa-story.html   Having new gun owners pass a firearm safety class would actually be a good thing, similar to new drivers passing a driving test. Civilian death toll in Ukraine since February 2022 invasion by Russian forces hits an estimated 10,000. “The U.N. human rights mission in Ukraine, which has dozens of monitors in the country, said it expects the real toll to be ‘significantly higher’ than the official tally since corroboration work is ongoing. Harvard Law Review accused of not publishing article on ‘genocide’ in Gaza due to ‘climate of fear’ about possible repercussions. “The two online chairs, as they are called, had decided to solicit an essay from a Palestinian scholar for the journal’s website. Eghbariah was an obvious choice: A Palestinian doctoral candidate at Harvard Law School and human rights lawyer, he has tried landmark Palestinian civil rights cases before the Israeli Supreme Court. Eghbariah submitted a draft of a 2,000-word essay by early November. He argued that Israel’s assault on Gaza should be evaluated within and beyond the ‘legal framework’ of ‘genocide’. In line with the Law Review’s standard procedures, the piece was solicited, commissioned, contracted, submitted, edited, fact checked, copy edited, and approved by the relevant editors. Yet it will never be published with the Harvard Law Review. Following an intervention to delay the publication of Eghbariah’s article by the Harvard Law Review president, the piece went through several committee processes before it was finally killed by an emergency meeting of editors. The essay, ‘The Ongoing Nakba’, would have been the first from a Palestinian scholar published by the journal.”   https://theintercept.com/2023/11/21/harvard-law-review-gaza-israel/

Toyota’s auto loan division to settle charges it mislead borrowers about additional fees. “The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on Monday said Toyota Motor Credit, the automaker’s U.S.-based lending arm, will pay a $12 million civil fine and $48 million to car buyers harmed since 2016. ….Monday’s settlement concerned ‘add-on’ products, typically costing $700 to $2,500 per loan, that provide protection when vehicles are damaged, stolen or out of warranty, and when car buyers die or become disabled. According to the CFPB, thousands of borrowers complained to Toyota Motor Credit that dealers lied about whether these products were mandatory, or rushed the paperwork so they would not realize how much they were paying. The regulator said Toyota Motor Credit made it ‘extremely cumbersome’ to cancel the bundles, including by routing more than 118,000 borrowers to a hotline where agents were instructed to dissuade cancellations, and often failed to provide refunds. Wyden—a lead sponsor of the Government Surveillance Reform Act (GSRA), a bipartisan bill introduced earlier this month—shared some of what he has learned about the program and urged the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to release information about it. Now known as Data Analytical Services (DAS), the program was initially revealed to the public as the Hemisphere Project by The New York Times in 2013. Information collected includes caller and recipient names, phone numbers, and dates and times of calls. ….Wyden noted that ‘White House funding for this program was suspended by the Obama administration in 2013, the same year the program was exposed by the press, but continued with other federal funding under a new generic sounding program name, ‘Data Analytical Services’.”   https://www.commondreams.org/news/mass-surveillance

Number of Europeans who died in 2022 heatwave revised upward to 70,066. “The new estimate was published in The Lancet Regional Health–Europe, a peer-reviewed medical journal. The researchers received European Union funding. The revised estimate was based on a framework the team devised to quantify how many heat-related deaths went uncounted by focusing on weekly temperatures and mortality data. The new theoretical framework analyzed more precise aggregated daily temperatures and mortality records from 147 regions in 16 European countries where more than 400 million people live. ….Extreme heat is particularly dangerous for older people with preexisting heart and respiratory diseases. Those who are poorer and more isolated are also considered more at risk. The study found more women than men died last year due to the extreme heat.”   https://www.courthousenews.com/heat-related-death-toll-in-2022-europe-revised-to-more-than-70000/

President Biden celebrates 81st birthday. “U.S. President Joe Biden turns 81 on Monday, a milestone likely to draw attention to his status as the oldest person to ever occupy the Oval Office, with opinion polls showing Americans worried he is too old for the post he is seeking reelection to. Biden has addressed those who worry that he is too old for the rigors of the White House with humor and an attempt to convince voters that his age and experience over a half-century in public life is an asset in tackling America’s problems. ….If re-elected, Biden would be 86 by the end of his second term in office. Republican Ronald Reagan, who had the prior record as oldest U.S. president, ended his second four-year term at age 77 in 1989.”   https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/20/biden-turns-81-as-worries-about-his-age-weigh-on-re-election-prospects.html
